Kingdom too hot to handle for Treaty Men

Kerry 1-26 Limerick 3-9

Kerry advanced to another Munster Final appearance with a facile win over a hapless home side in the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick this evening.

In front of a sparcely populated crowd, the official attendance given at just over 6,000, James Horan's charges were unable to cope with the livewire Kerry forward line and in particular the aerial dominance of Kieran Donaghy.

The loss of inspirational midfielder John Galvin and full back Stephen Lucey in the lead up to the game was too much for the home side even though they did open the scoring inside the first minute through midfielder Jim O'Donovan.

The Kingdom men however were soon in to their stride and the warning bells were set off when they had what looked like a legitimate goal chalked off in the 3rd minute for a sqaure ball offence.  Points were tagged on by Bryan Sheehan and Declan O'Sullivan before Darren O'Sullivan scythed through the home sides defence and finished to the net after great build up play by the influential Donaghy.

With Limerick struggling really badly to win any sort of decent posession around the middle of the field, Kerry pressed home their advantage with further points added on by Cooper (2), Sheehan, Declan and Darren O'Sullivan.

Having not registered a score since the first minute of the game the home side finally showed some attacking promise in the 27th minute with a well worked goal by wing forward Seanie Buckley.  This score stemmed a mini Limerick revival and they tagged on further points in injury time at the end of the half to leave the half time score Kerry 1-11 Limerick 1-4.

If the home side had any chance of clawing their way back in to this game they really needed to start the second half positively.  Instead, however, Kerry continued where they had left off in the first and reeled off further scores through Cooper again, Donaghy and wing back Killian Young who had been afforded the time and pace to roam forward and punch over the bar.

The biggest cheer of the night was then received with the introduction of sub Paul Galvin for Darren O'Sullivan midway through the second half.  The Finuge man was immediately on the ball and looked eager for work after his injury troubles of late.

Limerick were really struggling to stem the wave after wave of Kerry attacks at this satge but they did put a move of note together themselves in the 19th minute and after good interplay the ball was finished to the net by hard working corner forward Ger Collins.

Jack O'Connor had the luxury of emptying his bench at this stage and subs Daniel Bohan, Barry John Keane and David Geaney all got on the scoresheet before a final consolation goal for Limerick by sub Seamie O'Carroll.

The Kerry manager will be very pleased with the penetration of his forward unit heading in to another Munster Final but may have a sleepless night or two trying to figure out how his defence managed to leak three goals against a home side whose forwards were living off scraps throughout the game.  For James Horan he will be glad that there will not be forward units as razor sharp as the Kingdom's in the qualifiers but he will be concerned how the heart and spine of his team seems to be sucked from it with the absense of John Galvin.

Moyvane hold all the Aces

Moyvane B 1-13 St. Senans B 1-7

Moyvane retained their North Kerry league crown with a commanding second half performance to overcome a spirited St Senans side in Duagh tonight.

The men from Mountcoal started brightly and with a foothold in the midfield area they raced in to a three points to one lead through the trusted boot of centre forward Alan Doran.

The Newtown men upped the tempo at this stage and with corner back Mark Mulvihill shutting out all comers, centre back Sean Lynch imposing himself around the midfield area and Jackie Mulvihill orchestrating matters from centre forward, they clawed their way back in to the game and with that the momentum started to change.

The decisive score of the first half followed in the 22nd minute when a flowing Moyvane move resulted in full forward Mike "Bull" O'Connor winning posession on the edge of the square, turning his marker and blasting the ball to the roof of the net.  Moyvane kicked on from there and tagged on a further point before the half time whistle to leave them leading at the interval by 1-4 to 0-4.

The champions stormed out of the blocks in the second half and two quick points by corner forward Timmy Noonan had extended their lead to 1-6 to 0-4 by the 35th minute.  The switch of Noonan from corner forward to wing forward at the break was already reaping dividends.

St Senans kept in touch through the accurate free taking of Doran but Moyvane then hit a purple patch and tagged on further points from Noonan (2) and John Jack Mulvihill (2), the first by Mulvihill a beautiful score from 30 yards on the right touchline.

The winning line was now in sight for Moyvane but St Senans threw themselves a lifeline in the 56th minute with a well taken goal by substitute Sean Dowling.  There was no panic in the Moyvane side however and they closed out the game with a further score from the outstanding John Jack Mulvihill.

Best for Moyvane on the night were the aforementioned Mark Mulvihill at corner back, the tigerish Edmund Sweeney at wing back, Timmy Noonan after his move to wing forward in the second half and the two Mulvihill's, Jackie and John Jack for their tireless efforts.

John Jack Mulvihill accepted the cup on behalf of injured captain Chris Foley and it was no more than he deserved for his Man of the Match performance on the night.

Red Mist decends once more on Kingdom

Kerry 2-16 Tipperary 0-11

Reigning Munster Champions Kerry opened their 2011 campaign with a double scores victory over a dogged Tipperary side in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney today.

The winning scoreline was rather flattering to the home side and Kingdom manager Jack O'Connor will be concerned that the disciplinary demons that marred their 2010 campaign re-surfaced again with the sending off of wing back Tomas O'Se.

The visitors were well drilled by manager John Evans  and with his inside knowledge of the Kerry football scene they took the game to their more illustrious oppenents from the off.  Midfielder Goerge Hannigan imposed himself on the game from the first whistle, wing back Cathal Dillon did a man marking job on Kerry danger man Declan O'Sullivan and the Grogan's, Seamus and Barry, were causing plenty of problems for Kerry defenders Marc O'Se and Tom O'Sullivan with their intelligent running and effective use of posession.

The home side seemed to be unsettled by the re-shuffle of their midfield which they were forced in to before throw in when midfielder Anthony Maher had to cry off with what appears to be a re-occurence of a knee injury.  His replacement, Seamus Scanlon, failed to make an impact in his battle with the aforementioned Hannigan.  They did however have flashes of brilliance from the ever dangerous Colm Cooper and with centre back Eoin Brosnan driving forward at every opportunity and the hard work of Declan O'Sullivan and Donncha Walsh they overcame their early difficulties and had stretched their lead to 0-9 to 0-5 heading to the half time whistle.

It was at this juncture that O'Se was involved in an off the ball incident with Tipperary wing forward Hugh Coughlan, and after a discussion with his linesman, the referee produced a straight red card and this now means that the talismanic defender faces the prospect of an eight week suspension.  This would be a major blow to Kerry's hopes of provincial success.

Spurred on by a home crowd feeling a sense of injustice for the dismissal, the home side raced out of the blocks in the second half and Tipperary's hard work in the first half was undone within minutes when Kerry were awarded a penalty when Kieran Donaghy was hauled down in the square.  The spot kick was expertly dispatched by Bryan Sheehan and further scores from Sheehan and the dashing Darren O'Sullivan had extended the home sides lead to nine points.

The Kingdom had moved Kieran Donaghy out to midfield at this juncture with the aim of winning more primary posession which he did to good effect.  This complemented the hard working Bryan Sheehan and also meant the deployment of Declan O'Sullivan to full forward where he continued to pull the strings from then until the final whistle.

Tipperary were very unlucky that they did not add a green flag of their own when Barry Grogan's effort was disallowed for a square ball before Philip Austin's rasping effort cannoned off the crossbar.  They did add on scores from corner forward Conor Sweeney and subs Brian Mulvihill and Peter Acheson but these were cancelled out by the stylish Cooper and the ever running Donncha Walsh.

The home side eased home in style with Sheehan pouncing for their, and his, second goal in injury time.  Kerry now go forward to a semi final meeting with Limerick at the Gaelic Grounds on the 4th June.  Manager Jack O'Connor will be happy that their campaign is up and running but he will know that they do not seem to be any closer to solving their midfield quandry and also that a further dismissal will attract more unwanted media attention.  For Tipperary, they will take heart from a solid game plan that worked effectively in the first half and will hope now that they will get a favourable home draw in the first round of the qualifiers.

Moyvane B 1-12 Listowel Emmets B 1-9

Defending champions Moyvane qualified for the North Kerry League Final after a hard earned win over old foes Listowel in Duagh this evening.

Moyvane started very brightly and raced in to an early lead with a well taken goal from full forward Mike "Bull" O'Connor. With Jackie Mulvihill orchestrating matters from centre forward Moyvane tagged on further points through Mulvihill himself and also industrious wing forward Timmy Noonan.

Listowel slowly worked their way back in to the game through a goal from hard working corner forward Charlie O'Brien and had three unanswered points before the break to leave the half time score Moyvane B 1-6 Listowel B 1-3.

On the resumption Moyvane continued as they had started the previous half and tagged on further points from David "Crocket" Moloney and a beautiful score from the ever willing John Jack Mulvihill.

Listowel, realising that the game was now slipping away from them, began to make use of the strong wind in their favour in the second half.  They delivered long ball in to their full forward line which started to put the up to then secure Moyvane rearguard under pressure.

In a frantic final few minutes and with just three points between the teams Listowel went for a game saving goal but the Moyvane defence stood firm and they now advance to the final against St Senans B who defeated Clounmacon in the other semi final.

Best for Moyvane on the night were the ever dependable Timmy Kennelly and Michael Woods in the full back line, the tigerish Edmund Sweeney at wing back, Jackie Mulvihill at centre forward, until he had to retire injured early in the second half, and sub Kevin Fitzmaurice in the full forward line once introduced at half time. The evergreen Paudie Buckley was a constant threat for Listowel and he was ably assisted by corner forward Charlie O'Brien and wing back Billy Doyle.

Moyvane Team and Scorers:

Brendan Galvin, Mark Mulvihill, Timmy Kennelly, Michael Woods, Liam Kennelly, Sean Lynch, Edmund Sweeney, John Jack Mulvihill (0-2), James Kennelly (0-1, 1 free), Martin Sheehy, Jackie Mulvihill (0-3, 1 free), Timmy Noonan (0-4, 2 frees), Paddy Greaney, Mike O'Connor (1-0), David Moloney (0-2)
